The first model from Hyundai’s Ioniq EV-focused sub-brand announced summer 2020, the Ioniq 5 moves the brand’s EV offering “on to a whole new level”, according to Hyundai Motor UK managing director Ashley Andrew.
It sits on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) battery electric vehicle architecture, also being used for Kia’s new EV6 flagship, and comes with a choice of 58kWh or 73kWh battery packs; the former as rear-wheel drive only while the 73kWh is available with both rear- and all-wheel drive.
Range stands at up to 240 miles for the 58kWh battery model, while the 73kWh variant gives up to 287 miles in all-wheel drive and up to 300 miles in rear-wheel drive.
As with the Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5 features 800V charging as standard, which when combined with a 350kW ultra-rapid charger will provide an 80% charge in 18 minutes. It supports both domestic wall box charging and mainstream public 400V high-speed charging, using the motor and the inverter to convert the voltage from 400V to 800V to give optimised charge times when possible.
It will be available in three specification levels – SE Connect, Premium, Ultimate – alongside the special Project 45 launch edition that launched this spring.
The entry-level £36,995 Ioniq 5 SE Connect 58kWh RWD features a 12-3inch LCD audio, visual and navigation system with DAB, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, LCD driver’s instrument cluster, wireless phone charging for compatible devices, rear-view camera and 19-inch alloys. Driver assistance features include navigation-based smart cruise control, highway drive assist, intelligent speed limit assist, lane keep assist with lane following assist and driver attention alert.
The Premium is priced from £39,295 for the 58kWh RWD and £41,945/£45,145 for the 73kWh RWD/AWD. It adds in features such as dual LED projector headlamps, power tailgate, four-way power driver’s seat, and heated driver and front passenger seats and steering wheel. Extra ADAS features bring highway drive assist level 2 with automatic lane change function, forward collision assist with junction function and blindspot collision avoidance assist.
The Premium trim also offers customers the optional (£365) Vehicle 2 Load pack (V2L). Also seen on the EV6, the V2L function allows customers to charge any electric devices, supplying up to 3.6kW of power.
The Ultimate trim is priced from £42,295 for the 58kWh RWD, and £44,495/£48,145 for the 73kWh RWD/AWD. Additional features bring leather seat coverings, Bose premium sound system, head-up display with augmented reality, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and the Vehicle 2 Load functionality as standard. Customers can also specify the Eco Pack, comprising battery heating system and heat pump, and the Tech Pack, which includes blind view monitor, parking collision avoidance assist reverse, remote smart parking assist and surround view monitor.
All Ioniq 5 models also come with a one-year subscription to the Ionity high-speed charging network and get Hyundai’s five-year unlimited mileage warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty.
Orders for the Ioniq 5 open at the end of May and deliveries start in July.
