Rolls-Royce to go EV-only by 2030

30 September 2021

Rolls-Royce has previewed its first fully electric car while committing to going EV-only by 2030.

Due to imminently start on-road testing, the Spectre will launch in Q4 2023, fulfilling a prophecy made by co-founder Charles Rolls in 1900 of an electrified future for automobiles, along with a recent promise by CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös to bring an electric car to market this decade.

Müller-Ötvös added that the new announcement marked the most significant day in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since 4 May 1904 when Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce first met and agreed that they were going to create ‘the best motor car in the world’.

The Spectre arrives on the back of recent electric concepts, including the 102EX fully operational all-electric Phantom revealed in 2011 and the 103EX concept in 2016, and will “change the course of the future of luxury”.

Müller-Ötvös said: “We embark on this bold new future with a huge advantage. Electric drive is uniquely and perfectly suited to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, more so than any other automotive brand. It is silent, refined and creates torque almost instantly, going on to generate tremendous power.  This is what we at Rolls-Royce call ‘waftability’.

The Spectre will undergo global testing covering 2.5 million kilometres, replicating some 400 years of use, and will be underpinned by Rolls-Royce’s own spaceframe architecture, debuted in 2017 with the Phantom and being used to exclusively underpin all Rolls-Royce motor cars.

And by 2030 all Rolls-Royce products will be fully electric.

“With this new product we set out our credentials for the full electrification of our entire product portfolio by 2030. By then, Rolls-Royce will no longer be in the business of producing or selling any internal combustion engine products,”

– Müller-Ötvös
